Happy New Year!!!
Man, I don't know about you, but I am so freaking stoked for 2019. I know 2018 was a hard year for a lot of us, myself included. It was a messy year that included a lot of ups and downs, a lot of pain, a lot of sadness, and a lot of transformation. I know that the 2019 Jamie is not the same as the 2018 Jamie, and I am so damn grateful for all that hard, messy stuff, because without it, I wouldn't be here to show you how you can transform your messiness into a wonderful masterpiece. Trust me, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being messy!
With this being the first episode of Own Your Journey of the New Year, I thought it would be fitting to share my biggest tips on how you can make 2019 the best year ever (and every year after that, too!). This is the time of year that the dieting industry LIVES for. The food manufacturers, media, and major diet corporations thrive on your resolutions based on your insecurities. They know that after the holiday season is over, we're all feeling a little bloated, a little guilty (for what?), and probably a little bit crappy about ourselves because of all the delicious food we ate over the last few months (PS. you don't have to feel this way, and you don't ever need to feel guilty about food. More info below), so they thrive on all our insecurities and use them against us to make a buck. And it's working!!!
Every year, we all make these resolutions to lose weight, get healthy, get fit, or eat cleaner (sometimes all of the above). So what do we do? We turn to the tried and true dieting industry to solve all our problems! But wait, that doesn't work, because here we are again, another year later and still not happy with the way we look or feel.
You KNOW dieting doesn't work. We've talked about this before, and the conversation isn't over. But I also believe that a lot of the problems begin with the New Years Resolution process. Resolutions make us feel shitty about ourselves. They make us feel "less than," or like we're not enough because we don't measure up to some standard, so we have to do something to fix ourselves (enter the next diet you read about). Resolutions are fear-based. Instead of making resolutions this year, I'd like to invite you to set INTENTIONS.
Get intentional about what you want your life to be like a year from now. How do you want to feel about yourself? What do you want your relationships to feel like? How do you want to live, and who do you want to be? Then, get intentional by setting 2-3 intentions to commit to for the year ahead. Think about what your current priorities are, and what areas of your life you think could use some TLC (hint: it doesn't always have to be your body or your appearance 😉). Intentions, unlike resolutions, are love-based. They sound more like "reconnecting with my body," or, "allowing myself to trust my body to do what's best for me," or even, "being more aware of the way my thoughts make me feel." Don't those intentions sound much better and more supportive than, "Lose these 20+ pounds and fit into a size 2 pant again?"
Once you set your intentions, simplify them by choosing a theme or two for your year. For example, the intentions that I have set for 2019 are the following:
Summarizing these three intentions can be simplified down to the themes of "connection" and "growth." Connection for deepening my spiritual connection with God AND connecting with you, and growth for growing my business and growing my expertise. My 2018 themes were "transformation" and "acceptance." Get creative and think about how you want your year to unfold! You can't do this wrong.
Intentions are so much more effective than resolutions because they are supportive of who you are now, and who you want to become. Resolutions tell us that we have to change something about ourselves to be worthy of something, and I'm just not cool with that. You'll notice that when you get intentional about your future and commit to yourself, you'll be much happier, healthier, and have much greater progress than you would with resolutions. The other thing that's really cool about intentions that I didn't mention on the episode is that they are limitless. You set an intention and it can take you wherever you want to go. Whereas with resolutions, well, usually we set the bar to reach some type of physical goal and we either reach it but don't sustain it, or we never reach it at all. Get intentional, see more permanent results.
