I hate social media.
Really, I do. If you know me on a personal level then you know I pretty much talk shit on it daily.
You might be confused since I'm pretty active on some social media platforms, but the only reason I'm there is that YOU'RE there!

You need to be aware that what you see on social media is NOT real 99% of the time. I saw a tweet from Meek Mil the other day (I know, what a philosopher), but he tweeted something like "lol this shit aint real why you all up in it smh" or something like that. I'll see if I can find it later, but he's right!
Social media makes us compare ourselves to some false ideal, and makes us feel shitty about ourselves because we don't measure up or fit that ideal. So naturally, your confidence and self-worth go in the toilet while your social media presence continues to increase.
I also hate that people are so attached to their phones these days. We need human connection and interaction - I don't care what anyone says about not wanting to be around other people and enjoying loneliness - connection is a basic human need. We all need it to survive.
Social media makes that connection virtual, which simply isn't enough to meet our needs. We need one-on-one, in person, physical interaction with each other. We are social beings!
Don't get me wrong, social media does have it's benefits, and I recognize that. But the damage it can do on and the harm it can cause is detrimental.
We never feel like we're enough - everything on social media these days has to look professionally edited, cropped, filtered, and have all these bells and whistles on it to JUST get a simple like! Are you kidding me?? That is NOT real.
We're trying to fit some ideal image that doesn't even exist - no wonder we feel so shitty about ourselves.
But you can do something about it. You'll hear my top suggestions on how to have a more positive experience with your social media and learn ways you can start improving your confidence and self-worth.
The number one thing I recommend to every single human is to spend less time living through their phones and more time living through their bodies. Trust me. There's a real world out here! It's pretty awesome, you should really see it.
Put. Your. Phone. Away.
If you pay attention, you might notice that I hardly every am on social media except for very specific times of day, mostly just at night. I do my best to engage with everyone, but I have to protect my mental space and my energy, and that means not being on my phone all day every day.
Set paramaters for yourself, and unfollow anyone who makes you feel bad about yourself. This tip is lifechanging!
Finally, let go of trying to be enough, or be more and do more to "fit in." You are ALREADY enough! You need to know that and believe that.
Stop trying to be like everyone else.
Pay attention to what's happening around you in the physical world. Be present, because if you're not, you'll miss the most beautiful moments of your life. It doesn't matter if you watch them later on a video you took, you missed the real life version because you wanted to get the perfect video for social media (I know because I used to do that too).
What we really need to do is reconnect with ourselves and with our bodies, and with our friends and family on a deeper level. Spend more time with the people you love IN PERSON.
Finally, get to know yourself. Your REAL self. The number one relationship you need to work on is the one with yourself and your body. You already have everything you need to feel and be confident.
